Camp Šobec — stay next to a turquoise river in a beautiful forest park

In recent years, Slovenia has been creeping onto people’s radars as a fantastic country for camping holidays. This shouldn’t be surprising, as this is a country that has a lot to offer its visitors, especially those looking for plenty of activities, picturesque countryside, and of course, quality campsites. We feature one such campsite here, Camp Šobec, which is found in the idyllic location near Lake Bled and Triglav National Park.

Camping Šobec

Camp Šobec is the only campsite in Slovenia located within a large forest park. It is one of the top 5 campsites in the country and it is definitely the largest. Due to its size, you may think that this popular site will be bustling and not a place to head to for peace and quiet. Surprisingly, the opposite is true. Thanks to the forest, it is always possible to find a camping spot here where you will feel hidden from your neighbours and surrounded only by the peace of the trees. The further away from the reception that you set up camp, the quieter the spot becomes.

Overview of Camping Šobec

Should you choose to head for the trees, you can still easily access the amenities that this campsite has to offer with the added bonus of getting closer to the river Sava. This beautiful river flows almost around the entire campsite but is only accessible from a few prime spots that have a shallow and slow entry point. The temperature of the water is a refreshing 14 degrees, perfect for cooling off during the summer months! However, since Camp Šobec has it all, you can also head to the clear lake, which is of course calmer, safe for children, and accessible to all.

Camp Šobec is certainly enchanting. It is not only the picturesque location among the trees but also the high quality of the facilities. Bathrooms are spread conveniently throughout the site, as are spots for washing dishes. All the water on-site, regardless of what kind of tap it might be, is drinkable, including the water in the swimming lake! It all comes from the surrounding mountains so is naturally filtered on its way to the camp. This is something the owners are rightfully proud of. Many of the water taps are topped by plant pots filled with herbs, which you can add to your drinking water for a deliciously refreshing treat.

It is impossible to be bored here

With so much to do at Camp Šobec, we feel it would be remiss to not highlight as much as possible so you can really get the most out of your stay here! The campsite itself has many fantastic play areas for kids, spread nicely throughout so each one is never too crowded. The artificial lake on site is another obvious perk and the adjacent island is perfect for sunbathing. Bring your paddleboard along if you’d like to whittle away the time floating along here. Dogs are also welcome at the camp and in the lake, so the whole family can enjoy a swim here!

Take to the river…

Slovenia is known for river rafting experiences, most famously on the river Soča, but the river Sava running through Camp Šobec should not be overlooked. You can reserve a rafting trip at the reception. The trip takes you roughly 10km down the river over a couple of hours. In addition to the crystal clear waters there are rapids to navigate, breath-taking views to admire, and of course, chances to swim. Local, knowledgeable guides will accompany your trip, which makes the experience all the richer.

…or go high!

If you’d rather be above the river than on it, the Zipline Dolink Bled is the adventure for you! Even if you’re a little afraid of heights, mastering your fear is more than worth it for this unforgettable experience. You will fly a distance of around 600 meters at an altitude of 70 meters above the Sava Valley, offering stunning views with an adrenaline rush to boot! Children can also take part, flying with an instructor, so it’s an extraordinary trip for the whole family. You can also book this at the campsite's reception and a car will pick you up from there to bring you to the location.

When it comes time to completely relax and recharge the batteries, take a short bicycle ride to the famous Lake Bled. It’s less than 10 minutes from Camp Šobec and this is a natural marvel that really needs to be seen in person. The clarity of the water is something else – you can see more than 12 meters deep! If you take a trip to this lake, bring your swimwear as there are many access points around the shore and the water is irresistible.

Close to Lake Bled is the Vintgar Gorge, which is another natural wonder not to be missed. This gorge offers magnificent views of the river Radovna flowing through it and you will feel as though you can never take enough pictures to do this gorge justice. The trail is less than 2km long but it can still take hours to complete as it’s hard to draw your eyes away from the stunning rocks, rapids, and water. The walls of the gorge stretch up over 100 meters! This is truly a place where nature has outdone itself.

It is possible to cycle here from Camp Šobec, but the way is a little hilly. It's a short and easy car ride and there's plenty of parking at the gorge.

Even with all the things mentioned here, this is just a taste of the experience on offer for those who book a holiday at Camp Šobec. After enjoying a holiday here, it will be hard to think about going anywhere else!
