United Kingdom 🇬🇧

Camping in England is really tricky, it is do-able but not easy, nor technically legal. Scotland is running a scheme called Stay the Night where self-contained campervans and motorhomes can stay one night in Forestry Commission car parks between certain months of the year. Wildcamping is legal in Scotland but this is aimed at hikers in tents. In Wales, it again is illegal to wild camp, unless you have permission from the landowner, which is often easier said than done.

Best practices for wild camping

  1. Sleeping for one night — as a tired driver, you should be fine sleeping on the road in all European countries.
  2. Roaming & parking — if you don’t set up any camping gear outside, it is more tolerated than full camping.
  3. Camping, wild camping or freecamping — this usually involves taking your chairs, table, and awning out.
  4. National Park & beaches — it’s usually illegal to spend the night in National Parks all over Europe and on beaches in the southwest of Europe.
  5. High season — July & August — usually more strict than off season in summer destinations.
