A gorgeous spot between the Canal du Nivernais and on the banks of the Yonne

The Petit Port campsite is a haven of peace, where calm and serenity are the order of the day. Situated in Burgundy, just 2h30 from Paris and 40 minutes from Auxerre, this campsite is also directly accessible by bike from the Canal du Nivernais. Enjoy a breath of fresh air with friends or family in an unspoilt setting on the banks of the Yonne. There are plenty of tourist activities nearby, such as pleasure boat trips or getting close to nature on the towpath, with its rocky landscapes and picturesque villages along the way.

One of the main features of this campsite is the charming swimming area in the river. A lovely, white, sandy beach has been created for easy entry into the refreshing river water and it is just wide enough to have a proper swim.

The temperature is perfect for a hot summer’s day and there is plenty of shade provided by the surrounding trees so you don’t have to bake in the sun when you’re not in the water.

It is a popular area with the locals and the atmosphere here is friendly and joyful – all generations get together to enjoy this area and it is great to be a part of it!

This is also true for the campsite and is the main reason we sought it out during the hot summer! There are some fantastic pitches underneath the huge trees, which provide an amazing amount of shade throughout the day.

However, if you are traveling during times when you are seeking sun, the other half of the campsite is much more open and you can definitely park up in the sun. The spots are really spacious, wherever you choose to stand, and you can pick your spot on arrival depending on your preference and what is free. Some of the spots also have a great view of the river.

The reception and facilities are all housed in one central building and the reception does have limited opening times.

This is not an issue though as you can move in and make yourself comfortable without staff assistance, and just make sure you check in when someone is manning the reception. The facilities are basic but everything is provided that you may need during your stay, including laundry facilities, a fridge, and some simple cooking equipment.

You can also purchase snacks, drinks, and ice cream from the reception area. A small hut is found at the entrance to the campsite with tourist information so you can explore the local area and make the most out of your stay.

The heritage of Châtel-Censoir is rich and varied. It is just a short walk from the campsite and is well worth your time. As you wander around, you’ll discover the Church of Saint-Potentien and its 11th-century crypt crowned by a Romanesque choir, its Renaissance nave from the 15th and 17th centuries, and its 18th-century sacristy. The building is, of course, listed as a Historic Monument. You can also see the residence of the governors, known as the “upper château,” dating from the 16th century.

Ambassador’s Opinion

Perfect for hot summer days

The river for swimming and the shade that covered our pitch were life savers during some exceptionally hot weather! We planned a night but stayed longer as it was such an enjoyable spot.
