This is a small but lovely camper stop with 8 pitches on the meadow next to the Headquarters of Thayatal National Park. When staying here, you are able to hike in the transboundary national park, have a day trip to Hardegg, the smallest town in Austria (2 km), to the historic wine town of Retz (15 km) or to other destinations in the Waldviertel, Weinviertel and Czech Republic. In other words, it is the perfect spot for a holiday, whatever you are into!

Right next to the campsite is the National Park house with its numerous service facilities, such as a restaurant, bike rental, wildcat enclosure and adventure playground.

The area for campers to stay is nicely separated from the other parking areas for the national park visitors, so even if there is a lot of comings and goings it won’t impact your stay at this spot.

It is so quiet at night here!

The cafe in the headquarters has a small selection of snacks and meals. There are also cakes and ice creams available, which is just what you need after you have trekked through the national park!

A couple of the trails bring you through Czechia, so you can walk through different countries during your stay here!

There are so many different trails, if you are really into hiking you could easily spend a week here. The river is gorgeous and the forest seems endless from the many view points along the trails.

Toilets are available in the NP headquarters, which is open from 9am until 6pm. They are exceptionally clean.

Electricity is payable on the spot, it is €1 for 6 hours, and water is also €1 for 100 litres.

Though there is not much shade on the parking spots for campers, there are benches, picnic areas, and hammocks to be found under the trees, so you do not need to bake in the sun during the summer months.

Enjoy refreshments in the cafe while the kids play in the awesome playground

Within the headquarters there is so much information about the national park and maps so you can plan your walks each day. The staff at reception are also friendly and helpful, ready to help with anything you need during your stay and exploration.

A peaceful place to stay

We came here during peak season expecting to be crammed in with other campers and had the place to ourselves! The visitor carparks were busy but we barely noticed thanks to the distinct location of the campers' area. It's a really well-organized place and everything is here to enjoy a few nights close to the wonderful national park.

Be Advised

It might be a bit hot in the summer — There isn't any shade at the camper parking area, which is the only shame about this spot. However, the forest is always cooler, so you just have to get out into the national park! Also, the parking spots are very slightly sloped – we didn't mind in our old van, but more high-tech vehicles may need to break out their wedges.
