Why I Left a Well Paid Gig
A ton changed in my priorities since 2012. I’ve fixed cashflow & step by step I’m fixing overall net worth. I’m paying attention to the fact, that life’s short and there’s a reason to not work as hard as it is technically possible.
A few things clicked in spring 2015
We were cruising Europe in our caravan and I felt that it was the right time to become autonomous again. I wrote a good bye email to co-workers and returned to freelancing — uncertain but rewarding, fathership — highly rewarding and stock investing — highly uncertain.
That would not be possible without inspiration by people I know and follow. I thank them for sharing their knowledge, inspiring others & truly changing my life. A few others also helped me to formulate my thoughts. I wish the email inspires you to make changes to your own life. One step at a time.
The Email — Vita to Walk The Earth
Hey everybody at The Company,
After a considerable time thinking, I have decided to take a sabbatical and hand off my duties at The Company for a while because:
— I need a pause to clear my head and decompress
— I’d like to spend more time with my kids — they deserve me being around
— I need to read books, learn new skills and try new things
I believe The Company will succeed and grow exponentially. To me, the changes at The Company got to a point where my strengths might become weaknesses. And so it’s time for me to pause and think about the future for a while.
Honestly, it’s been a great ride at The Company so far. And I’ve never grew so much in my career than with you all. I thank you really much for that. I value all the time each of you gave me, all the advice and this experience will stay with me till the last day of my life. Thank. You.
It’s interesting how your perspective on live changes over time. In my 20s, I was all about making and spending money. Now, I’m all about investing and spending reasonably to get the most of my life. I have found that I do not need that much. And I have learned how to enjoy the beauty of life. In a caravan.
In retrospect, a lot of the changes in my values were influenced by inspiring leaders such as Tony Hsieh, Marcus Lemonis, Tim Ferris, Miton shareholders, John Vanhara, Daniel Gladis, Robert Vlach, Money Mustache, Joel Greenblatt, Robert Kiyosaki, 37 Signals team, Wally Byam, Mali Mish and many others. Check who I follow on Twitter if you are interested.
Years ago, I started to build-up passive income, to escape the rat race. And the time has come when I don’t need to work to pay bills. I’m not rich, but I can live a rich life now. This Pulp Fiction piece explains my view even better. That allows me to re-think my position at The Company. And so you might see me less often for a while.
I will be around for as long as needed and I’ll help the transition to be as easy as possible. So no worries, everything will be just fine.
With love — Vita
And one last thing. A song: Passenger — Life’s For The Living
