Internet in your Motorhome – Find the right WiFi router and provider for traveling

Welcome to our article dedicated to WiFi solutions for mobile internet for motorhomes. As experts at Camperguru.com and passionate remote workers, we can have first-hand experience of how important a reliable internet connection is when traveling or on holiday.

Life in a campervan offers a lot of freedom and adventure. But there are also challenges, for example finding reliable mobile internet in a motorhome, especially when you are abroad. Unfortunately, not every campsite has good internet. Not having stable internet access can be a bit frustrating, especially if you need a reliable connection for work or just want to stay online to keep in touch with family and friends.

Of course, you can use mobile Wi-Fi hotspots or special routers to use the internet in your motorhome. There are also campsites with Wi-Fi access. Make sure that your data plan is sufficient if you plan to use a mobile hotspot and check the network coverage at your destination.

Good Wi-Fi is worthwhile and allows you to surf the web or work online without any obstacles and enjoy your trip in your campervan even more. With a sufficiently strong internet connection, you can not only work well and without problems, but also watch TV, stream films, watch your favourite series and news on tablets, or search for the next interesting place to visit on your travels.

With a high-quality Wi-Fi router, you can even give several devices access to the Ethernet at the same time. This means you can conveniently check emails on your smartphone and use your laptop to complete important tasks – all without interruptions caused by slow connections.

Let's take a closer look at the best WiFi solutions for traveling in a motorhome or caravan in the following sections. We've put together a brief overview of the best options available, comparing performance, cost, and ease of use. In this article, we'll also show you what you should look out for when choosing a WiFi solution and how you can maximize your WiFi performance when traveling.

The best WLAN solutions for the internet in your motorhome

Here we have put together some WLAN solutions for internet reception in motorhomes:

  • Mobile router: A mobile internet router for motorhomes is a good choice for many campers. These devices have the advantage that you can install your own wireless network and connect and use two or more devices at the same time. You can connect to the internet either via a SIM card or via an existing Wi-Fi network. Well-known providers of routers are Huawei, TP-Link and Netgear.
  • LTE hotspot: LTE hotspots or mobile hotspots, often referred to as MiFi, are another good option for traveling, no matter where you are. These small devices use the mobile network to connect to the internet. They have a built-in battery and only require a SIM card with a data plan. Simply switch on, connect wirelessly, and start surfing the net.
  • Webcatcher: The Webcatcher is a specially developed antenna amplifier for motorhomes and offers improved reception in rural areas or on remote campsites.
  • Starlink: Starlink provides motorhomes with a high-quality internet connection, regardless of location. This is particularly advantageous in remote or rural areas where a traditional mobile phone or WiFi connection is often weak or non-existent.
  • Gigacube: The Gigacube from Vodafone is a powerful solution for fast internet in motorhomes with unlimited data volume – ideal for frequent users or families.
  • Tethering: Another option is to use mobile phones, smartphones, and tablets as a Wi-Fi hotspot. However, it is important to remember that this may incur additional costs, especially if you only have a tariff with a limited data volume. After all, if you spend a long time surfing the net or streaming films, you will quickly use up a lot of mobile phone data.

When choosing the right WiFi solution for the internet in your motorhome, factors such as individual needs, reception in the camping region you are traveling in, and possible additional costs should be taken into account. Compare the offers of different internet providers for motorhomes and check their options in terms of performance, user-friendliness, and availability of service providers.

Also remember that the internet connection depends not only on the chosen device, but also on the location and the available networks in the area.

Personal experience with WLAN routers – from Ralf

The idea of working online while traveling in a campervan immediately appealed to the team here at Camperguru. Of course, this requires a stable and fast internet connection. Camperguru team member, Ralf Koll, found the following solution:

WLAN solution

“I opted for the compact Azimut S3 Wi-Fi router and the robust MAKO 5G Dome LTE roof antenna. Both devices are easy to install. The router has 3 ports and a SIM card slot for 1 standard-sized SIM card.

I installed the WLAN router on the side in the wall unit above the seating area and the aerial was mounted on the roof above it. I think the router is well installed here, as it takes up very little space in the cupboard and provides an optimum connection, as I sit directly underneath it at the table in the campervan and work online. I even have internet when I'm sitting outside, about 2 to 3 metres away from the router, working on my laptop.”

How does it work out?

“The router and antenna have proved their worth so far. Whether I was in the city, at the campsite, or anywhere else – I always had good reception with the 5G antenna. The router provided good connectivity and a stable internet connection, allowing me to do exactly what I wanted to do: work online while traveling in the campervan.”

How can I choose the right WLAN solution for traveling in a motorhome?

As a passionate camper, you know how important reliable internet in your motorhome is, whether you want to work online for business, simply stream a TV series, or watch YouTube videos. But how do you choose the right internet options for motorhomes? Here are some important factors to consider when choosing a suitable solution:

  • Network coverage: Before buying a mobile phone solution, check how far the provider's network coverage (e.g. Telekom) extends. Make sure that the network provider covers your preferred destination and that there are no “dead zones” in the wireless network.
  • Speed: Pay attention to the maximum download and upload speeds of the tariffs on offer. The faster the connection, the better you can work online or surf the internet.
  • Data volume: Also check the included data volume per month. If you like to stream and surf a lot, you should choose a tariff with a generous data or GB volume that suits your needs, or look for options with unlimited data volume (flat rate).
  • Flexibility: Think about whether a monthly contract is right for you or whether a prepaid tariff would suit your needs for internet in your motorhome better.
  • Compatibility: Make sure that the WiFi solution is compatible with your motorhome and check the technical requirements and whether certain connections or adapters are necessary.
  • Ease of use: Make sure the WLAN solution has a user-friendly interface and is easy to set up. You certainly don't want to waste your valuable camping holiday having to carry out complicated installations.
  • Customer service: Find out more about the provider's customer service. It is important to know that you will be helped quickly in the event of problems and that you won't have to wait long.

In addition to these factors, there are other aspects that should be considered when choosing a suitable WiFi solution for the internet in your motorhome. To help you make your decision, we have compiled a list of the best WiFi solutions here.

Campersim

CAMPERSIM is the perfect solution for the internet in your motorhome. With CAMPERSIM, you only need a single SIM card for currently 36+ countries with a total of 107 networks. Switzerland and all Scandinavian countries are also included. Wherever you are, CAMPERSIM always finds the most powerful network with up to an incredible 300 Mbit/s, so you can stream your favorite series, surf the web at your leisure, or work while on the move. At the moment, this SIM is only available for purchase in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, though they have plans to expand their service.

Starlink is an ambitious project developed by SpaceX that aims to provide internet access via a series of satellites orbiting the Earth. The Starlink project is an ingenious solution for anyone who loves traveling and being on the move. With Starlink – according to Elon Musk's vision – high-speed internet via satellite will soon be possible to almost anywhere on earth.

Advantages of Starlink

  • Access to the Internet anywhere – One of the biggest obstacles for those traveling by motorhome is access to the Internet. Not all destinations have reliable or fast internet connections. Starlink changes this and ensures a reliable internet connection regardless of location.
  • Easier working while traveling – If you like traveling, reliable internet like Starlink promises can make it easier for you to work and stay connected while on the move.
  • Always and everywhere safely informed – With reliable internet access, you can get updated weather forecasts and find out about safety concerns in your area. This can be particularly important if you are in remote or less traveled areas.

Costs of Starlink

  • Monthly fee: According to the latest information from Starlink, high-speed Internet on the move costs
    • Mobile tariff – £85 per month with unlimited data inland (use on one continent).
  • Hardware: The necessary equipment for Starlink, which consists of an antenna, a tripod and a router, is currently on offer at half the usual price – £225 instead of £450!

Tip: You can pause and restart the contract at any time. The contract term is always 30 days once you have activated it. If you pause, there are no costs.

Despite the relatively high purchase costs of Starlink, this service could be an interesting consideration for motorhome travelers and vanlife, as Starlink offers the possibility of having reliable, fast internet in your motorhome everywhere you go. Definitely a must for anyone who not only wants to stay online while traveling but also wants to work while on the road.

Having fast internet everywhere is also extremely important for Camperguru co-founder Amos Struck! He has chosen Starlink as his WiFi solution for traveling in his campervan.

Amos: “Starlink consists of the Starlink antenna with the corresponding bracket, the router, power cable, and Starlink cable. The setup is simple. Place the antenna on the bracket and then align it with a clear view of the sky. Then connect the router to the power supply and connect the antenna to the router. Starlink establishes a connection to the Internet in just a few minutes. Done.

The compact router is located in the rear garage and takes up hardly any space. Starlink is set up quickly and as soon as Starlink is connected, you have high-speed Internet and can work online, stream films or play online games. This makes working online fun!”
