Old industrial steel mill reconverted into recreational area

Duisburg is situated in the Ruhr Valley of Germany, still an area with lots of heavy industrial activity. In the 1980s an iron melting plant was shut down and the city decided to transform it into a recreational area ‘Landschaftspark Duisburg Nord'. The plant is not a clean museum, everything is left to be. Campers can park (for free) across the road at the end of the parking lot, and there are no facilities here except for a few trash cans but the spot is great for a surprisingly quiet night in an industrial surrounding.

View point – 70m blast furnace

Not for faint hearted

The main highlight is the 70m blast furnace. You can climb the old steel stairways till the top and have a spectacular view over the entire site; not for the faint hearted! During weekends the site is illuminated. There is a youth hostel, some restaurants, a lot of sports activities (diving, climbing…), nice walking trails and cycling tours.

A cross over between a sculpture and a ‘walk'-rollercoaster built on the debris of an old zinc factory, definitely a must see (Ehlingerstrasse 47249 Duisburg).

Bauhaus in Krefeld

Krefeld: for the architecture lovers.. ‘Bauhaus’ buildings, Haus Lange and Esters on Wilhemshofallee 91, 47800 Krefeld. Fine examples of the iconic style by Mies van der Rohe combined with nice sculptures and beautiful gardens. Also Mies’ only industrial complex, nowadays a co-working space with new designed restaurant and gin-bar (autumn 2021).
